Evaluation Methods:
To receive credit for this course you must:
Kinds of Classwork:
Students will demonstrate competency in the standards through a variety of methods including: Weekly Engagement Points Earned (EPE’s), in-class writings, essays, tests and quizzes, as well as individual and group projects and presentations.
Classwork and Attendance:
Excused Absences: Students are allowed a one day for every day absent to make up missed work or make other arrangements. Remember my purpose is to provide opportunities to help your child to be successful.
Unexcused Absences: Per school policy, work will not be accepted.
Grading:
Grades will be assessed utilizing a variety of formative and summative assessments. All assignments will be included in the final grade, as will Engagement Points Earned and citizenship. Points will be assigned for each assignment. Assignments fall into one of two categories, will be as follows:
Professionalism/Daily Work: Examples include “practice” assignments, Weekly Engagement Points Earned (EPE’s), weekly warm-up pre-tests, daily warm-up activities, journal entries, participation, and reading checks. Weighted scores account for 20% of total semester grade.
Skills Based Assessments: Any formative or summative assessment where students demonstrate proficiency in a Common Core State Standard(s). Examples include weekly warm-up post-tests, tests, quizzes, essays, projects, and presentations. Weighted scores account for 80% of total semester grade.
Final grades Calculations:
Quarter 1: 40%
Quarter 2: 40%
Final Exam: 20%
Grade scale:
Students may earn up to 30 points per week in Engagement Points. These points can be earned in the following ways:
100-92.5 A 89.4-86.5 B+ 79.4-76.5 C+ 69.4-66.5 D+ 59.4-0 F
92.4-89.5 A- 86.4-82.5 B 76.4-72.5 C 66.4-62.5 D
82.4-79.5 B- 72.4-69.5 C- 62.4-59.5 D-
Additional Skills-Based Grading Scale
To receive credit for this course you must:
- Complete all coursework with a D or better
- Turn your work in on time and in the proper format
- Adhere to school attendance policies
- Participate regularly in class discussions (both in class and online)

Test Re-writes: How to make-up points on quizzes and tests
Students may choose to make-up points they have missed on a test or quiz in the following ways:
Paper re-writes: How to make-up points on papers
Students may choose to make-up points they have missed on an essay by re-writing the essay based on the feedback given. Students will have one week from the day the essays are returned to complete this re-write. No extended time will be given.
Please note that rewrites are NOT available on projects, presentations or exams.
Late Work:
Assignments may be turned in up to two days late for a 20% reduction in final grade.
Students will receive no extended time for re-writes but must adhere to the one week timeline for when on-time work is returned. Also, please note that the maximum score for a late, but re-written, assignment is 80%.
No work will be accepted after two days.
Please note that students MUST have turned in an assignment in order to complete a re-write.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is literary theft of another author’s ideas and/or exact words, without giving proper credit to the source in both the text of your essay and on the Works Cited sheet. This rule is true of direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries. Plagiarism is a serious ethical offense and may be grounds for the student’s failure in this class. Cheating of any kind is forbidden.
Students may choose to make-up points they have missed on a test or quiz in the following ways:
- 1/2 of the missing points by writing out complete answers for each question. The answers must be detailed, specific and come in the form of complete sentences.
- 1/2 missing points by making an appointment with Ms. Day before or after school to verbally answer the questions. Again, the answers must be detailed and specific. Please note that you can not read the answers off a paper--you must show that you know and understand the information!
